Dental Implants

The dental implant is an artificial root (like a tooth root) that is inserted into the jawbone (either the maxilla or the mandible). It often looks like a screw and is composed of titanium or titanium alloy used for tooth replacement.

Implantology is the branch of dentistry based on dental implants. The anatomy of a tooth is very easy to understand, the Crown and the root are the two main components of a natural tooth. The crown is the visible part of the tooth, and the root is located below the gingiva, in the jaw-bone.

The history goes to the 1950’s, when Swedesh professor, Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark discovered the biocompatibility of titanium in rabbits. Brånemark investigated the blood microcirculation in rabbit’s tibiae with a titanium chamber and noticed that metal and bone were perfectly integrated without any rejection. Based on this observation, he developed customized cylinders with microscopic optics in titanium frame for insertion in the tibia of rabbit and dog. This phenomenon is named by the professor as osseointegration, the ability of living bone to fuse to titanium implants.

After many years of research, in the middle of the 1980s, the Dental Implant technique became known and started to spread around the world and Professor Brånemark is now recognized as the father of modern dental implantology, he expressed that, osseointegration anchors solidly the implant into the jaw, just like a natural root of a tooth. As a matter of fact, it is seen that titanium dental implants are resistant to chewing forces and are reliable in the long term. Moreover, when osseointegration is completed around the implant, the only way to remove this implant is to drill the bone that lies around it.

Dental Implants Procedure

The only important reason for a dental implant is the replacement of missing teeth, apart from that, titaniums are used in many forms in medical and dental treatments for the fractures of bone. Dental Implants are considered for patients who have one or more missing teeth. The dental implant is not a single-step procedure, depending on the number of teeth to be replaced and also the density of the bone Implant is positioned into the jawbone, after a dental implant, a long period of 3 months is given to the implant to bind with the underlying bone, for an osseointegration, mentioned above, a gingival former or a collar is placed over the implant followed by an abutment is inserted into the implant. A artificial Crown, bridge, or a partial and full Denture known as overdenture is prepared and placed over the abutment according to the number of teeth to be replaced. Benefits of Dental implants

  • Dental implants have multiple advantages over other treatments involving removable prostheses.
Implants do not require grinding or modifying healthy adjacent tooth like in tooth-supported dental bridges.
  • Implants give the impression of having natural teeth, both aesthetically and functionally, and act as an artificial root anchored in the bone of the jaw, like a natural tooth root. The patients may, therefore, regain the integrity of their facial features that had been affected by the loss of several teeth.
  • The replaced tooth will never be affected by caries.
  • With time, Implants prevents the underlying alveolar bone from resorption, mainly occurs due to loss of blood supply due to the loss of tooth but in cases of a dental implant blood supply is regulated like a normal tooth structure hence the bone remains in its natural state.
  • Patients can have a normal diet and with good chewing, there will be a good digestion of food.
  • Implant and fixed prosthesis and restorations are easy to maintain than a removable complete or partial denture.
